Grants Awarded

In the years between 1992 and 1999, the Bennie and Martha Benjamin Foundation began the process of developing partnerships with individuals, agencies, institutions and governmental bodies involved in the planning, training and providing services in the health care field.

The Foundation’s early liaisons were formed with the University Of The Virgin Islands, the USVI Department of Health, the Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital on St. Croix and the Roy L. Schneider Hospital on St. Thomas. As needs were identified, the Foundation sought to be responsive to them. While initial medical scholarships were designed for medical students, other scholarships were created to address the shortage of trained professionals in other ancillary health fields, such as midwifery, audiology and pharmacy. Likewise, as needs were identified in equipment and training tools, the Foundation was pleased to grant awards to agencies and institutions for state of the art equipment and materials.

Once the Scholarship Program and liaisons with the major institutions were established, the Foundation was able to move on to assisting smaller, non-governmental community based agencies (“NGOs”) to support their grass-roots efforts at improving health care services in the Territories. The following summarizes the significant awards granted during this period.
